A lone oak reaches toward the horizon—but it’s not truly alone. Beneath the water, the roots may still be connected to distant trees through quiet mycelial threads.

This painting is a reflection on solitude, unseen connection, and the beauty that grows when we stand apart. Even when we feel isolated, something deep within us remembers: we belong.

What a wonderful world

It was so moving drawing my late father in law, Bob Cook, 1933-2021. I could almost feel the soft fuzziness of his precious head as I drew.

Bob was a jazz saxophonist. It was family legend that he went to see Louis Armstrong play the night his first daughter was born. He was forgiven! Bob was a devoted family man ever since.

Lighting a candle and playing What a Wonderful World was the only way his loved ones could come together during the peak of the COVID that took him.

Foreshadowing

This watercolour and charcoal sketch of my lovely step daughter gazing at one of the Nether Largie standing stones at Lochgilphead, Kilmarton. It was 23 February 2020. Thank goodness we did not know what was being foreshadowed. A beautiful memory though.

Sharing the glow

This piece is a reflection of the quiet transformations we go through when we begin to heal. The butterfly emerging from the crown is a symbol of thought taking flight, of imagination helping us transcend pain. Through creativity, we can begin to reimagine who we are becoming—not just who we have been.
