Spring 2018 Newsletter

Spring is finally here and we've survived the Beast from the East and the frantic deadlines that can come with the financial year end. The extreme weather in March certainly stopped many of us in our tracks, at least for a bit, but also saw many reaching out to help which brought us together in new ways.

March was also Women's History Month, and I was privileged to celebrate International Women's Day at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, hosted by the Scottish Women's Convention. It was wonderful to be amongst such a diverse and phenomenal group of women. #PressforProgress was the theme for IWD2018, and, for me, this should be focus across the spectrum of equalities and human rights. The words of Martin Luther King Jr  resonate so strongly in these times: " Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals. "

Less inspiring perhaps, but necessary, is falling in line with GDPR. We've taken stock of our own approach to handling personal data, as well as reflecting on how this impacts on the use of equality data. Equality data certainly has been used effectively to quantify the true extent of the gender pay gap , nearly 50 years since the introduction of the Equality Pay Act in 1970.

And finally, Arc of Inclusion is founded on the principle of collaborating to harness our strengths. This Spring has also seen wonderful collaborations developing with a focus on accessibility and adventure.
GDPR and staying in touch with you
By now you will have had umpteen emails in your inbox about GDPR and staying in touch. If you'd like us to stay in touch, please CLICK HERE to add your email. We'll send another reminder out before the end of May, as we'd love to stay in touch, but won't be able if you don't give your active consent. Thank you!
Our complicated relationship with tick boxes

Equality data and GDPR

Putting a tick in a box seems like such a simple thing. Yet when we ask someone to fill out an equality monitoring form, we are asking them to confine the complexity and multiplicity of their identity into a set of labeled boxes. Click here to read more...

Getting it right for hearing

Ideas for Ears and Arc of Inclusion have had many deep conversations about inclusive environments.

The listening and hearing environment is such an important factor in people being able to fully participate and contribute. Ideas for Ears focuses on evidence and practical solutions, particularly when it comes to meetings and events.
Hearing & listening conditions in meetings
Have you ever been to a meeting and found it hard to hear the speaker or presenter? Maybe it was because the venue acoustics were poor, the speaker was too far away or a microphone wasn't used.

These same sorts of issues are having a particularly big impact on people with hearing loss. According to survey research by social enterprise, Ideas for Ears, poor experiences are common and widespread. This is causing people to feel excluded and ignored and leads to them missing out on information, not contributing as they could or would like to, and being less inclined to attend future meetings.   You can see the survey results here

The scale and significance of the difficulties being experienced has led to Ideas for Ears producing a new protocol for meetings. This sets out how meetings should be run as standard in order to improve the likelihood of everyone being able to hear and follow things appropriately. Consultation around the new protocol closed on 15 April. The final document is due to be launched in May.   Click here for more info.

Exciting collaboration with Cycling Without Age Scotland

We're thrilled to bits to be working with Cycling Without Age Scotland and Communities Along the Carron Association to support their equality and inclusion focus. Cycling Without Age is a movement started in 2012 by Ole Kassow. Ole wanted to help the elderly get back on their bicycles, but he had to find a solution to their limited mobility. The answer was a trishaw and he started offering free bike rides to the local nursing home residents.

Cycling Without Age Scotland is a brilliant initiative based on principles of generosity and reciprocity. Everyone has something to give, whether that's pedal power or wonderful stories to tell; because everyone has the right to feel the wind in their hair...

All terrain adventures with Trossachs Mobility

Like any good adventure, this one was a little bit scary, a little uncomfortable at times, but totally thrilling, and exhilarating. Trossachs Mobility provide accessible adventures, and it's such a pleasure to develop our collaboration. More about this next time...

February 2018 Newsletter

Welcome to our first newsletter!

2017 seemed an especially dark year bringing with it a tsunami of division, polarisation and inequality. Although this has been the source of suffering, discomfort and anxiety for so many, it has also lifted the lid on things that were hidden in plain sight. This has given me a renewed purpose to put the spotlight on the environments we exist in, be they in the workplace or the services we use.  Accessible, safe and inclusive environments make sense, but need conscious nurturing so that they feel that way to everyone, not just those who hold power.

This year we aim to help shift the focus of organisations towards maximising the positive impact of their environments, both in the workplace and the services they provide. Policy, legal compliance and a focus on process is a necessary step along the equality and inclusion journey, but how much impact do they make to the day to day experience of staff or customers? It is time now to really mobilise good intentions and sincere endeavour towards achieving meaningful, lasting impact.

The purpose of this newsletter is to:
  • Let you know what we're up to
  • Share news from our collaborators
  • Highlight dates and events that celebrate equality and inclusion

Please get in touch if you would like to add any items to our monthly newsletter.

Updates

Hallmark of Inclusion®

Hallmark of Inclusion®

Developing our Hallmark of Inclusion® is an exciting process! This is a mark of quality awarded to organisations who have demonstrated their commitment to nurturing safe, inclusive environments. We are working on validating a multi-stakeholder measurement tool that will focus on how people experience environments, and flag areas that need development. Here's an overview of the process. Please get in touch if you're interested in helping us to trial the measurement tool. We will also be doing some more stakeholder engagement, and would really value your feedback.
Equality & Inclusion CPD workshops

Equality & Inclusion CPD workshops

We delivered a series of CPD Equality & Inclusion training workshops for Scottish Mediation members. It was a pleasure to work with Sam Tedcastle, of Centre for Good Relations to deliver sessions which delved deep into how mediators create accessible inclusive environments. Feedback from members has been excellent, and we'll be looking at how this can be further developed.

"This is where #MeToo becomes #UsTogether…and together we are stronger."

NHS Hull CCG of the year

NHS Hull CCG of the year

Congratulations to one of our clients, NHS Hull Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) who was named CCG of the Year in the Health Service Journal (HSJ) awards. Their approach to involving local people and equality and inclusion is really what differentiates them, and also makes them a pleasure to work for!

Dates and celebrations

LGBT History Month

February is LGBT History Month. What are you doing to celebrate? You can find some great resources here: http://lgbthistorymonth.org.uk/
.
The LGBT movement can teach us so much about how to organise for social change, and how an inclusive movement supported by allies makes all the difference
womens-suffrage

6 February 2018 marks the centenary of The Representation of the People Act 1918 which gave women over 30 and all men over 21 the right to vote. This was only partial suffrage, but it marked a victory which led to full suffrage in 1919.

We honour those who sacrificed so much for basic equality before the law. Progress in equality and human rights should never be taken for granted or assumed.
womens-history-month

March is Women's History Month, and 8 March 2018 International Women's Day. We'll be celebrating by attending a Scottish Women's Convention event at Edinburgh Parliament.
We believe women's equality is about everyone's equality, and our challenge is to create an inclusive view of equality that addresses systemic barriers and power imbalances.
We have a shared calendar in the resources section of our website which helps us keep track of events and celebrations. You're welcome to use or share it, and also please let us know if you would like us to add any events or celebrations.
We hope you'll find our newsletters worth a read, but also don't want to clog up your inbox with stuff you're not interested in. If you would like to unsubscribe please email unsubscribe@arcofinclusion.co.uk.
